What Is Odoo Online? A Complete Guide to Its Plans and How It Works

If you're weighing up setting up your ERP on Odoo, the first decision isn't which apps you need — it's where and how your instance gets hosted. Odoo Online is the simplest of the three options Odoo offers (Online, Odoo.sh, and On-Premise), but simple doesn't mean every plan is the same. This guide walks through exactly what Odoo Online is, how its managed hosting actually works, and what each of its three plans genuinely includes, without the fine print that usually gets left out of the pricing page.

What Exactly Is Odoo Online?

Odoo Online is Odoo's official SaaS hosting: you create an account, pick your apps, and Odoo takes care of the server, backups, security patches, and uptime. There's nothing to install locally and no VPS to manage — you log in through your browser at your instance's URL (yourcompany.odoo.com) and start working straight away.

The trade-off for that simplicity is control: on the standard Odoo Online plan you can't install modules with your own Python code (only pure data modules, with no programming logic), there's no access to the database or the server, and major version upgrades are scheduled and carried out by Odoo, not by you.

It's the fastest way to get a business up and running when you don't need custom development or complex integrations from day one.

Odoo Online's 3 Real Plans

Odoo sells Odoo Online across three plans. The difference between them isn't only price — it's what you're actually able to build on top of it.

One Free App (€0)

This includes a single app of your choice, unlimited users, and — if your chosen app supports it — multi-company too. It's a genuinely useful option for trying Odoo out or running a very specific single-app use case — CRM, Invoicing, Project — but it has a hard limit: the moment you want to install a second app, or combine Studio with another app, Odoo pushes you onto a paid plan. Don't treat it as a free-forever plan built for normal business use — it's a single-app entry point, nothing more.

Standard (€11.90–€14.90 per user/month)

This includes every Odoo app. It's the plan that covers most SMBs that want Sales, Purchase, Inventory, Accounting, and Project all in one place. What it does NOT include is the part that actually matters: no Odoo Studio (you can't create or edit fields, views, or reports on your own), no multi-company, and no external API to connect third-party systems yourself.

Custom (€17.90–€22.40 per user/month)

It's the Standard plan plus three pieces that change what you can do without a developer: Odoo Studio, multi-company, and external API. This is the plan you need if you want to touch fields, views, reports, or automations yourself, or if your company runs more than one legal entity inside the same database. All three plans are also available on Odoo.sh and On-Premise — they're not exclusive to Odoo Online.

Odoo Online vs Odoo.sh vs On-Premise: Where Each One Fits

All three run on the same software and the same apps. What changes is who manages the server and how much control you have: Odoo Online is 100% managed by Odoo (you never touch a server); Odoo.sh is managed hosting but with your own development, staging, and production environments — ideal if you're going to have custom modules or connectors with real integrations; On-Premise is your own server, with full control but also full responsibility for keeping it running.

Which Plan Should You Choose?

As a rule of thumb:

• Free plan: for testing, freelancers with one very specific need, or validating Odoo before you commit to anything.
• Standard: for single-company SMBs that don't need to touch code or customize forms and reports beyond what Odoo ships out of the box.
• Custom: for companies running more than one legal entity, or that need to adapt fields, views, reports, or automations with Studio without depending on a developer for every small change.

A common mistake is signing up for the Standard plan assuming it already includes customization, only to discover Studio isn't available, and then having to switch plans later with users already working in the system. It's worth deciding this before you onboard your first users.

The Honest Limits of Odoo Studio

Studio, included in the Custom plan, lets you do the following without writing a line of code: create and edit fields and views, design forms, build reports and PDFs with a drag-and-drop visual editor (logos, tables, barcodes or QR codes, conditional sections), set up automations and automated actions triggered whenever a record changes, put together approval flows with notifications, and even build simple new apps from scratch.

What Studio doesn't handle well: reliable Python logic (complex computed fields, constraints, or custom methods), complex scheduled tasks (crons), and customizations that survive an Odoo version upgrade without review. For complex production business processes, relying on Studio alone usually falls short.

You also don't need to be an official Odoo partner to hire or do customization with Studio — it's configuration inside your own account, not development work that requires special accreditation.
