Search for how to customize Odoo Online and you'll run into contradictory advice: some say you need to write code, others insist dragging a few fields around is all it takes, and others tell you to just install an app and call it done. The confusion comes from the fact that Odoo Online actually offers three separate customization paths, and each one solves a different problem. Before you touch anything, it's worth knowing which one is yours.
Key point: which customization path you can use depends on the Odoo Online plan you're on, not just on what you need to do. Pick the plan first, then the how.
The 3 real ways to customize Odoo Online
There are exactly three routes, and they aren't interchangeable:
- Odoo Studio — drag and drop fields, views, reports and automations, no code required.
- Odoo App Store apps — modules already built, either by Odoo or by third parties, that you install in a couple of clicks.
- Custom development — your own Python code, only possible on Odoo.sh or an On-Premise install, never on standard Odoo Online SaaS.
What each Odoo Online plan allows (and doesn't)

One free app (€0)
The free plan gives you 1 app and unlimited users. It supports Odoo Studio only if Studio is the single app you choose — and in that case you also get multi-company. The moment you want a second app alongside Studio, or any app besides that first one, Odoo Online pushes you onto a paid plan. It isn't "free with Studio thrown in, no strings attached": it's free only if Studio is literally the only thing you install.
Standard (€11.90–14.90/user/month)
The Standard plan unlocks every Odoo app, but with no Odoo Studio, no multi-company and no external API. It's the plan for running Odoo as-is: you get the full native feature set, but you can't reshape it with Studio or wire it up to outside systems through the API.
Customized (€17.90–22.40/user/month)
The Customized plan bundles every app plus Odoo Studio, multi-company and the external API. It's the only Odoo Online plan where Studio is available with no restrictions, and the mandatory starting point if you want to customize anything beyond standard configuration.
All three plans — and what they let you customize — also exist on Odoo.sh and in an On-Premise install, with one difference: there, you can also add real custom development on top.
Path 1: Odoo Studio — customization without code
Odoo Studio is Odoo's built-in visual customization layer: a drag-and-drop editor for reshaping forms, views, reports and automations. What you can build with Studio without writing a single line of code
- Create and edit fields and views in any module, without touching the source code.
- Design new forms tailored to your actual process.
- Build reports and PDFs with a drag-and-drop editor: logos, tables, barcodes/QR codes and conditional sections.
- Set up automations and automated actions that fire when a record changes.
- Put together approval workflows with notifications, no development required.
- Build simple new apps from scratch for processes Odoo doesn't cover out of the box.
The honest limits of Studio
- No reliable Python logic: no robust computed fields, no complex constraints, no custom methods.
- Complex scheduled automations or cron jobs don't hold up well inside Studio.
- Customizations may need a review pass whenever Odoo bumps its version.
- Governing complex processes in production with Studio alone is hard: no tests, no real version control, no code review.
One important clarification: you don't need to be an official Odoo partner to use, or hire someone for, Studio customization. It's simply configuration inside your own Odoo Online account, whoever ends up doing it.
Path 2: Custom development (Odoo.sh or On-Premise)
Standard Odoo Online SaaS blocks the installation of modules containing custom Python code: it only allows so-called "data modules", which ship with no .py files at all. For robust external integrations, real business logic or highly advanced reports, you need actual custom development, and that only runs on Odoo.sh or an On-Premise install. This isn't a technical whim: it's the only way to keep complex business logic, external integrations and advanced reports stable, version-controlled and reviewable over the long haul.
Path 3: Odoo App Store apps
The Odoo App Store brings together thousands of already-built modules, both official Odoo ones and third-party ones: marketplace connectors, country-specific e-invoicing, digital signature, logistics, HR and more. Installing them means no coding at all — just pick the app and activate it.
The important nuance is the same one as with custom development: on standard Odoo Online SaaS you can only install apps that qualify as "data modules" with no Python code. Apps that ship custom Python logic — many connectors and compliance modules among them — need Odoo.sh or an On-Premise install to actually run.
How to choose the right path
With the three paths laid out, the decision criteria are pretty direct:
- You need to tweak fields, views, a report or a simple automation → Odoo Studio, on the Customized plan.
- You need functionality a third party has already built (e-invoicing, a marketplace connector, digital signature) → an app from the Odoo App Store.
- You need robust external integrations, real business logic or highly advanced reports → custom development on Odoo.sh or On-Premise.
