«Community or Enterprise?» is the first question any SME weighing Odoo for its online store asks, and the answer you find online is usually confusing: some say Community «already does the same thing», others that Enterprise is mandatory from day one. Neither is always true. Here's the comparison without spin, focused on the differences that ecommerce SMEs actually run into, not a generic feature list.
Key point: Odoo Studio — the no-code visual customization tool — is Enterprise-only, full stop. It doesn't exist even on a self-hosted Community install. And within Enterprise, if you're on Odoo Online, the Standard plan doesn't include Studio either: you need the Custom plan. It's the most common mistake we see when an SME budgets the move to Enterprise.
Community and Enterprise, in one sentence
Odoo Community is the free, open-source edition you can self-host without paying any license. It covers the core most SMEs need: Sales, Purchase, Inventory, Manufacturing, Invoicing and the website builder with eCommerce. Odoo Enterprise is Odoo S.A.'s paid edition: it starts from the same core and layers on additional apps, official support and managed services (upgrades, Odoo.sh hosting), in exchange for a per-user, per-month subscription.

Studio: the detail that confuses most people
Studio is Odoo's app for adding custom fields, views, automations and reports by dragging and dropping, no code required. It's powerful, but it's Enterprise-only, always: there's no way to enable it on a Community install, whether self-hosted or hosted by a third party. And within Enterprise, on Odoo Online the Standard plan (11.90–14.90 EUR/user/month) doesn't include it — only the Custom plan (17.90–22.40 EUR/user/month) unlocks it. When Community + custom modules is enough for ecommerce
Most of the ecommerce SMEs we work with start — and stay — on Community. The core (Sales, Inventory, Invoicing, Website/eCommerce) is functional from day one, and you don't pay a per-user license. What we often do is complete Community with our own modules when there's a specific gap: marketplace connectors, carrier integrations, or regulatory compliance, without needing to jump to the full Enterprise edition for one specific feature. Does Odoo Community include Studio for no-code customization?
No. Odoo Studio is an app exclusive to Odoo Enterprise: it isn't available on any Community installation, whether self-hosted or hosted by a third party. On Odoo Online, you also need the Custom plan — the Standard Odoo Online plan doesn't include Studio even though it already runs on Enterprise underneath. If you're on Community and need that kind of visual customization, the alternative is custom development or migrating to Enterprise.
What does upgrading from Community to Enterprise actually cost?
On Odoo Online, Enterprise is billed per user, per month: the Standard plan costs between 11.90 EUR and 14.90 EUR/user/month, and the Custom plan —the only one that includes Studio— between 17.90 EUR and 22.40 EUR/user/month. If you'd rather host Enterprise on-premise or on Odoo.sh, the license is still billed per user, on top of hosting. Since Odoo revises its pricing periodically, we confirm the current price during the free initial assessment.
